The Sixth Dalai Lama was the ruler of Tibet under the Manchurian Qing Dynasty. It continued until the beginning of the 19th century. The authority of the Qing Dynasty steadily weakens to the point that it is merely symbolic. Tibet was once again de facto independent until the 1950s after the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912. Then, once again, China started to assert its control. In 1965, China built the Tibet Autonomous Republic (TAR). It was in 1959. The 14th Dalai Lama fled to India and set up a Tibetan government in exile in the Dharamsala.
