A tough, peaceful climb in Eastern Nepal takes you to the world’s third-highest peak. Kanchanjunga means “mountain of diamonds” in English. Padmasambhava, the legendary Lama, is said to have hidden the treasures of wisdom in this most magnificent of mountains. This walk leads you to the snowline via dense rhododendron forests in the lower section and high pastures with yaks grazing. During the months of April and May, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and good vistas of the mountains are also more frequent.
A visit to one, or both, of Kanchenjunga’s base camps. At 8,586 meters, the world’s third-highest peak is always conceivable for an all-around trekking adventure. So, our expertise suggests doing both base camps in one trip. When you reach Kanchenjunga’s upper elevations, you’ll see a large mass of Himalayan peaks flanked by a number of smaller but equally stunning Himalayan peaks. Lhotse (8516 m), Everest (8,848 m), and Kanchenjunga (8586 m), Makalu (8,481 m), and several others. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is an adventurous and challenging trek that takes you to the base camp of the third-highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters/28,169 feet), located in the eastern part of Nepal. It is a less frequented trek compared to some other popular routes like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, making it a great choice for those seeking a more remote and pristine trekking experience. Here is some useful information to help you prepare for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek:
Trekking Permits: Like all treks in Nepal, you'll need a few permits to undertake the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. These typically include the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. Make sure to obtain these permits through a registered trekking agency or the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu.
Best Time to Trek: The best time to undertake the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. Spring (March to May) brings beautiful blooms of rhododendron and clear mountain views. Autumn (September to November) offers stable weather and excellent visibility. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall, and the winter season (December to February) due to extremely cold temperatures and high snowfall.
Physical Fitness and Training: The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a challenging and strenuous trek that requires a good level of physical fitness and endurance. It involves steep ascents and descents, often in remote areas with limited facilities. Prior trekking experience at high altitudes is recommended, and regular cardio exercises and leg strengthening workouts are beneficial for preparation.
Accommodation and Facilities: Unlike some more developed trekking routes, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek has basic teahouse lodges along the trail. These lodges offer simple accommodation and meals. However, as the route is less popular, be prepared for more basic facilities and occasionally limited food options.
Altitude Considerations: The trek involves ascending to high altitudes, so acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude-related illnesses like acute mountain sickness (AMS). Take enough rest days during the trek to allow your body to adjust to the changing altitude. Stay hydrated, eat well, and avoid gaining too much elevation too quickly.
Pack Light and Smart: Pack essential trekking gear while keeping your backpack as light as possible. Some essential items include trekking boots, warm clothing, rain gear, a sleeping bag, first aid kit, water purification tablets, sunscreen, and a good-quality trekking pole.
Guided Trek or Solo: While it is technically possible to do the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek independently, it's highly recommended to hire a licensed trekking guide and/or porter. They will not only assist you with navigation and logistics but also provide valuable insights into the local culture and environment.
Respect Local Culture and Environment: Be respectful of local customs, traditions, and the environment during your trek. Minimize your impact on the pristine wilderness by disposing of waste responsibly and using eco-friendly practices.
Emergency and Communication: Understand the emergency procedures and communication options available on the trek. It's advisable to carry a satellite phone or a reliable communication device in case of emergencies.
Travel Insurance: Always purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking at high altitudes and includes helicopter evacuation in case of emergencies.
Remember that the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a challenging and rewarding adventure. Proper preparation, a positive attitude, and respect for nature and local culture will make your journey enjoyable and memorable.
