A Tibet overland tour can be an incredible adventure, offering breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and unique experiences. Here are some useful tips and information to consider for your Tibet overland tour:

Permits and Restrictions: Tibet is a region with special administrative regulations, and as a foreign traveller, you'll need several permits to visit. The primary ones are the Tibet Travel Permit, the Alien's Travel Permit (PSB permit), and the Military Permit (for certain restricted areas). You can only enter Tibet through organized tours with a registered travel agency.

Best Time to Visit: The best time for an overland tour is from April to October when the weather is relatively mild and the roads are accessible. Tibet experiences a harsh winter, and some remote areas might be closed to tourists during this period.

Acclimatization: Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is situated at a high altitude (3,656 meters or 11,975 feet). It's crucial to acclimatize to the altitude to avoid altitude sickness. Spend a few days in Lhasa before venturing into higher regions.

Health Considerations: Consult your doctor before the trip, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Altitude sickness is a real concern in Tibet, and it's essential to take it seriously. Carry any necessary medications and be prepared for the effects of high altitudes.

Transportation: Overland tours usually involve long drives on rugged terrains. Land Cruisers or 4x4 vehicles are commonly used for these journeys, as they are more suitable for challenging road conditions.

Accommodation: Accommodation options in remote areas might be basic. In larger cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, you can find more comfortable hotels. Be prepared for shared facilities in some places.

Respect Local Customs: Tibetan culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism, and it's essential to respect local customs and traditions. Be mindful when visiting monasteries and religious sites. Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals or religious objects.

Pack Wisely: Pack clothing suitable for both warm and cold weather, as temperatures can vary significantly during the day. Sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Cash and ATMs: Bring enough cash in Chinese Yuan (CNY) as ATMs might be scarce, especially in remote areas. Credit cards are generally not widely accepted outside of larger cities.

Photography: Tibet offers stunning landscapes, and photography enthusiasts will be thrilled. However, avoid taking pictures of military installations, government buildings, and sensitive areas. Always ask for permission before photographing locals.

Environmental Responsibility: Respect the fragile ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau. Avoid leaving any litter behind and be mindful of your impact on the environment.

Travel Insurance: Get comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude travel and any potential medical emergencies.

Language: While Mandarin Chinese is the official language, Tibetan is widely spoken. English might be limited, especially in remote areas, so learning a few basic phrases in Tibetan can be helpful.

Itinerary and Flexibility: Be prepared for changes in your itinerary due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances. Flexibility is essential for any Tibet overland tour.

Remember that travelling in Tibet can be a life-changing experience, but it's essential to be well-prepared and culturally sensitive to make the most of your journey. Enjoy the beauty of the "Roof of the World" and the warm hospitality of its people!
